Inn Zum Riesen (The Giant)

Nr. on the small map: 23 (Miltenberg)

In 1411, the tavern Zum Riesen was first officially mentioned. However, it is most likely considerably older. In 1504 it is named a royal inn. Among its illustrious guests are kings, archbishops and generals of previous centuries as well as actors, musicians and politicians in the 20th century. Worth mentioning are almost all achbishops of Mainz up to the 18th century, King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, Queen Christina of Sweden, Field Marshal Tilly, Theodor Heuss, Elvis Presley and many others.

The present building dates back to 1590. It is a prestigious Renaissance building. Since the innkeeper was not able to survive on noble guests only (who often did not pay their bills), the inscription on the house also invites citizens and farmers to step in.

The landlords also made part of their fortune as merchants, for example on the fairs in Frankfurt.

The architect Werner Jöst and his wife Cilly bought the inn in 1970 despite its worsening state, thereby saving it from being demolished. They renovated it in close cooperation with the historic monuments protection authorities. Today it is one of the best known sights of Miltenberg.

Tip: The Faust Brewery brews one kind of beer to be served at the tavern only. The Riesen-Spezial can be tasted in-house.
