Our region became famous not least because of its wines. Especially wine lovers appreciate the red wine from Bürgstadt which is on top of the list of the best red wines in all of Franconia. Many prizes have already been awarded to Bürgstadt, one of them being the “Vintner of the Year”, awarded by Gault Millau and many other prestigious awards.
Viniculture has a long tradition in Bürgstadt and Miltenberg: the first vineyards date back to the 8th century. Additionally, the tradition of wine taverns also dates back to medieval times. Ruby and tender red wines but also spectacular white wines can be relished directly at the vintners’, inside our rustic Franconian wine taverns, the Häckerwirtschaften, or during our guided tours through local vineyards (the Weingut Stich even has an alcohol-free wine).

Maybe you enjoy an adventurous tour where you can sneak a peek how vintners work and prune their branches, where you can eye the wine blossoms or you just enjoy the colourful wine leaves.
The Fränkischer Rotweinwanderweg (Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail) meanders for about two hours from the town hall, passing the tobacco loft along meadow orchards to well-groomed vineyards. Along the trail numerous display boards inform you about viniculture and grape variety.
The location in the valley basin between the densely wooded slopes of Odenwald and Spessart promote a very mild climate. The so-called Bürgstädter Centgrafenberg which consists of a mixture of clay and loam mottled sandstone offers best maturing conditions for Burgundy grapes. Even white wines like Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Riesling and Pinot Blanc strive for best quality in these conditions.
A great tradition: “Häckerwirtschaften”
Our tradition of “Häckerwirtschaften” (wine taverns at the vintners, which are only open for a few weeks per year) dates back to the Middle Ages. Up to nowadays, locals and guests from near and far enjoy gathering in the nice yards (or, if the weather is unfriendly, inside the warm and cosy homes) of our vintners, relishing the outstanding wines and treats of local Franconian dishes.
