Nr. on the small map: 16 (Miltenberg)
King Conrad III most likely gave Burkard, a member of the edelfreien (“free knights”) Lords of Weinsberg, the order to build the Mildenburg castle in 1144. For many years it was the office building of the noble burgraves who represented the Archbishop of Mainz in the district of Miltenberg. Following rather diverse periods in history the Mildenburg became the property of the town in 1979. At this point it was only partly inhabitable and very much in need of renovation.
For many years the authorities were looking for a sensible use of the castle, until the idea was born in 2000 to install a museum in cooperation with the diocese of Würzburg. Extensive renovations were started in 2010. In July 2011 the museum was inaugurated. It now presents icons of the Eastern Churches (16th to 19th century) in contrast to contemporary art as well as regular special exhibitions.
