Nr. on the small map: 25 (Miltenberg)
The Older Jewish Cemetery of Miltenberg was already established in the 15th century. It was in use until 1900. From 1901 on the Jewish deceased were buried in the new cemetery on the ground Am Klausrain.
In Hebrew one of the words for cemetery is בֵּי ת עוֹלָם beit olam: eternal home. For this reason, graves in Jewish cemeteries are considered the deceased person’s property and will remain there until the end of time, when Jewish belief dictates that the bodies will rise forever.
136 tombstones are still visible. The oldest still readable stone dates back to 1752.
This cemetery used to be larger. It was shrunk in size to make room for the stairs. There used to be a Jewish cemetery at another location, according to sources from 1336. In 1270, reports were given about the first Jewish residents in Miltenberg.
The association “Jüdisches Leben in Unterfranken – Biografische Datenbank e.V.” have not only collected the biographies of those Jews who fell victim to the Shoah, they also made a list of those buried in the Older Jewish Cemetery in Miltenberg – at least as far as the inscriptions are still legible.
Tip: You can buy a small guidebook “Jewish Miltenberg” at the Tourist Information for € 2.50.
