Nr. on the small map: 8 (Miltenberg)
The Schwarzviertel (black quarter) is the oldest part of Miltenberg with a lot of beautiful half-timbered houses, located between the Schwertfeger Gate and the market square. The mountain Greinberg casts its shadow onto the Schwarzviertel, so that in winter the sun barely reaches the ground; hence its name. In the Schwarzviertel you will find the brewery Faust, which has received numerous awards for its beers.
To generate additional building lots, people in the Middle Ages already dug off the mountain foot. This gave them the opportunity to hew cellars into the rock, which were important for storing foodstuff. The humanist Johannes Butzbach already mentioned these cellars in his description of the town in 1505. The vinoteque St. Kilian Keller has the deepest of these cellars in Miltenberg.
