House of the Bischoff Family

The tanning family Bischoff moved from Amorbach to Miltenberg in 1669. Here, in the Schwarzviertel, they successfully ran their business. The tanning pits were outside the city walls, near the river Main. In the 18th century they also owned a bark mill on the river Mud. They were also quite successfull as a kind of “”bankers””.
In 1817 Philipp Joseph Bischoff and his sister Josepha donated a substantial part of their property to create a charity trust for the city. The two benefactors lived modestly in the Schwarzviertel for the rest of their lives.
Their trust had a value of 150 % of the town’s budget in the year of the donation.
The “”Bischoffische Fonds”” still exists and supports Miltenberg citizens in financial distress.
