Miltenberg grew quickly in its early years and saw its first expansion around 1300. The eastern border was marked by the Wammesser gate. The gate, which was removed in 1784, shared dimensions with the Mainz and Würzburg gates.
The guards manning the gate at all times had additional duties like charging the road toll.
Following the town’s second expansion, the city walls were too lengthy to be effectively defended. Therefore, the eastern suburb would have been abandoned in the event of an invasion. In exchange, the walls above and below the Wammesser gate were raised to a height of about 10 meters (33 ft) and a bailey and a moat were added.
All the houses between Engelplatz and Wammesser gate were built after 1784.
The Wammesser gate also housed the torture cell and interrogation room used during the witch hunt from 1593 until 1630.
